Chef Evelyn stared at her reflection in the stainless steel backsplash, the harsh overhead lights casting shadows under her eyes. The critic's words, "overpriced and underwhelming," repeated in her mind like a broken record. Her hands felt clumsy, the simple act of wiping the counter a monumental effort.

The usually invigorating aroma of spices and simmering sauces now felt overwhelming, choking. She needed to escape. She found herself at the back door, and slipped outside. She walked down the alley, the grit and grime of the city clinging to her boots.

She leaned against the brick wall, the cold seeping into her bones. She needed to be alone. Her phone buzzed; it was a text from her partner. She didn't respond. She closed her eyes, and took a deep breath, trying to regain some semblance of composure.
