The constant drone of the highway outside the yard sale was adding to the pressure on Jessica. She was exhausted from the past few weeks, but even so, she felt like she needed to keep moving. The discovery of her childhood bear, Captain Calico, was the last straw. The very sight of his tattered sailor suit triggered an overwhelming wave of something she couldn't name.

She felt her fingers clench into a fist. The seller, a man in a Hawaiian shirt, seemed oblivious to her inner turmoil.

"How much?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper. The price was nominal. She handed over the money, the transaction completed with a mechanical precision.
