"Well, this is odd," Mark muttered, holding the card up to the light. He wasn't big on celebrations. He didn't even remember his own birthday half the time. He dropped the card on the table, a feeling of unease creeping over him.

He had a vague recollection of a falling out with a friend from years ago. He thought that person had moved, but who knew? He felt his hands begin to tingle. He ran his fingers through his hair. He went to the window and looked out.

The street was quiet. He felt his breathing quicken. He wasn't afraid of much, but the unknown, the implied threat of the unsigned card, unsettled him in a way he couldn't quite explain. He went to the kitchen and poured himself a shot of whiskey, his hand shaking slightly as he did.
