"What the hell?" Mark mumbled, the blood draining from his face. He'd been looking for a light read, a distraction from his mounting work problems, when he found the letter in a dog-eared paperback. The words spoke of a terrible betrayal, of a crime committed long ago, and of a witness who remained silent.

He felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. He couldn't shake a growing unease. He closed the book and paced his apartment, then opened it again and again, rereading the words. The quiet of his apartment felt like a deafening roar. The phone rang, making him jump. He didn't answer it.
