He stared at the letter, unearthed from a tattered edition of *The Count of Monte Cristo*. A chilling sense of dread washed over him. The writer confessed to a series of elaborate lies, a web of deceit woven over many years. He felt a sudden, inexplicable suspicion directed at everyone he knew, even at his wife, sitting across from him at the kitchen table.

He swallowed hard, then felt a wave of nausea rise. He dropped the letter onto the table, the paper fluttering down to land among their breakfast plates. He couldn't meet her eyes. He felt a need to break something.
