He held the letter gingerly, his fingers brushing against the fragile paper. The words, written in a shaky hand, described a life lived in shadows, a story of persecution hidden inside a copy of *Nineteen Eighty-Four*. He felt the blood drain from his face.

He had the odd sensation of being watched. He kept glancing at the windows, and the shadows seemed to lengthen, to twist. He felt a terrible sense of exposure. He had the overwhelming urge to destroy the letter, to erase its words. He closed his eyes, his breathing shallow and rapid.
