"Are you alright, Dad?" Maya asked, her brow furrowed. He was sitting at the kitchen table, the wallet lying open in front of him. The sheer volume of money inside was breathtaking. He had found it near the bus stop, just after getting fired.

He swallowed hard, pushing a hand through his thinning hair. "Fine, just… tired." His voice sounded strained, even to his own ears. He felt a cold sweat prickle his skin. He kept expecting a knock on the door, a voice demanding an explanation.

"You've been staring at that thing for an hour," Maya continued, her voice filled with concern. He forced a weak smile. He knew he was being obvious, unable to meet her gaze. He had to decide what to do. His thoughts spun erratically.
