The vibrant colors of the poster on her wall swam before Lila’s eyes. She felt the blood drain from her face as she noticed the slight indentation on the last page of her journal. The page containing the entry about her crush on the history professor. A wave of nausea washed over her.

She found her roommate, Chloe, in the kitchen, making a sandwich. She felt frozen, as if she were made of stone. The mundane activity was in stark contrast to the turmoil churning inside her.

Lila opened her mouth to speak, but only a small sound escaped. She swallowed hard, searching for the words, for the courage to confront Chloe. The taste of panic flooded her mouth. She couldn't do it. She turned and fled.
