The tapestry, depicting scenes from their ancestors' lives, hung limp and lifeless on the wall. Her brother, pressed for money, had decided to sell it. Her gut twisted.

She ran her hand along the rough fabric, as if trying to draw strength from the threads. She took deep breaths, trying to control the flutter in her chest. She kept repeating “It’s just an object,” but the words felt like ash in her mouth.

She felt like she was standing on the edge of a precipice, staring into a bottomless abyss. The world blurred around her. She felt ungrounded.
