The phone felt heavy in his hand. He’d been staring at it for an hour, avoiding the task at all costs. The caller ID displayed the name: "Mrs. Peterson." He already knew the conversation that awaited him. He could almost taste the bitterness.

He stared out the window at the rain, the droplets blurring the world outside. He had to make the call. He had to deliver the bad news. The silence in the room was deafening.

He took a deep breath and pressed the call button. The phone rang, each ring a hammer blow. He braced himself. "Hello, Mrs. Peterson. This is Coach…"
