The world seemed to shrink around Sarah. The lecture hall, normally a place of inspiration, now felt cavernous and intimidating. Her hands were clammy, clinging to the worn fabric of her jeans. She kept replaying the scene: the financial aid officer’s apologetic face, the carefully worded email.

She excused herself from the lecture, her legs feeling like lead. Walking through the crowded hallways, she bumped into people, muttering apologies she didn’t mean. The happy faces, the excited conversations – they grated on her nerves. Each step felt heavy.

She found herself in the women's restroom, staring at her reflection. Her eyes were wide, pupils dilated. She splashed cold water on her face, trying to clear her head, but the feeling of being utterly adrift wouldn’t leave.
