He stared at the letter, his breath catching in his throat. The words blurred, but the implications were crystal clear. Daniel felt a sudden, sharp pain in his gut, a twisting sensation. He crumpled the paper in his hand, his fingers tightening until his knuckles were white.

He rose to his feet, a wave of dizziness washing over him. The room spun slightly. He stumbled, catching himself on the edge of the desk. He needed to get out, to escape the suffocating atmosphere of his small apartment.

He pulled on his coat, his movements jerky and uncoordinated. The city outside, normally a source of excitement, now felt overwhelming. Every car, every pedestrian, every sound amplified his internal turmoil.
