The diner was always a safe space for Leo. The clatter of cutlery, the sizzle of the grill, the comforting predictability of the menu. But tonight, he couldn't sit still. He had seen her. Chloe. In the library, of all places.

She'd been absorbed in a book, and he'd approached with a hesitant smile. "Chloe? Remember me? Leo?" He'd expected a laugh, a hug, a rush of shared memories.

The unfamiliar look of confusion etched on her face had stolen his air. "I'm sorry," she'd said. "I don't think we've met."

Now, he shoved the salt shaker back and forth on the table, a nervous habit. The neon lights seemed to buzz too loudly. He couldn't eat. He had to leave.
