He had walked away from music, years ago. Now, a low hum pulled him toward the open-mic night at the local bar. He saw her on stage. The girl began to sing, and he recognized the tune of his song, "Broken Wings."

He felt the color drain from his face. He’d never heard anyone else sing it. He gripped his glass until his knuckles hurt. The girl’s voice was airy, light, unlike his own guttural rendition.

He felt a deep and unexpected surge of emotion, a mix of anger and something akin to hurt. He rose abruptly, knocking over his chair. He mumbled an apology and fled the bar. He couldn't be there. He couldn't stay.
