The printer spat out another document, the sound grating on Mark’s already frayed nerves. He had to re-read the email three times to ensure he had understood its contents. The company was being bought.

He got up from his chair and walked to the window, staring out at the cityscape. A sense of impending doom settled over him, heavy and suffocating. The concrete jungle suddenly seemed to reflect his own emotional state: cold, hard, and indifferent. He couldn't seem to shake this feeling.

He picked up his phone, scrolling through his contacts. He wanted to call his wife, to say something, anything. But the words caught in his throat. What could he say? "They're selling the company"? He closed the phone and just stood there, staring out the window, a knot forming in his stomach.
