The coffee cup wobbled precariously in her hand. She nearly dropped it, the scalding liquid sloshing over the rim. She just stared at the screen, her breath catching in her throat. She'd meant to text her best friend, Sarah, about the disastrous date she'd just endured. But *Mark*? Her ex-boyfriend? The one she’d been trying so hard to avoid.

Her stomach churned. The message contained a highly unflattering assessment of the date, complete with specific details she would rather bury. He would find it hilarious, and she could only imagine the mockery he would unleash.

She squeezed her eyes shut. She felt the sudden urge to run, to disappear. She was so done. So incredibly, utterly done.
