The lawyer’s words echoed in his head, a relentless soundtrack to his mounting unease. The notification was just a formality, he’d said. A legal formality. But reading it made his palms sweat. He ran a hand through his hair, mussing it further.

He slammed the document onto the desk. The sudden action jarred him. He took a few deep breaths, trying to steady himself. The silence in the small office seemed to press in on him.

“I can’t believe this,” he mumbled, the words sounding hollow and small. He stared out the window, at the buildings of the city. He felt lost and directionless.
