He had seen it coming, of course. But seeing it in writing, the cold, official words, still jolted him. He felt a tightening in his chest, a sensation of being trapped. He walked around the apartment, tracing the lines of the walls with his fingertips.

He needed to think, but his thoughts were a jumbled mess. He picked up a book, then dropped it. He couldn’t focus. He felt a desperate need to distract himself.

He ran a hand through his hair, again and again, his gaze darting from one object to another. He felt like a caged animal.
