Sarah slammed the letter onto the kitchen table, the sudden noise surprising even her. The paper fluttered, a pale ghost against the bright morning light. Her hands trembled as she reached for a cigarette, her usual morning ritual abandoned. She hadn’t smoked in months.

Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the silence of the apartment. It was from Mark, after all these years. He’d hurt her deeply. She reread the words, the familiar handwriting a painful reminder of betrayal. She felt a knot in her stomach twist.

She walked towards the window, hands clasped. She could still see the city, the buildings, the world moving on. But her own world felt fractured. She needed to do something. Anything. She considered calling her friend, but instead turned to look in the mirror. She let out a heavy sigh.
