“The… the recording studio?” Jasper questioned, his voice strained. He'd been sure he'd inherit the family's record label, his life’s dream. He was a musician, for goodness sake! He imagined the creative freedom, the opportunity to bring his music to the world.

Instead, his sister, Iris, received the label. He got his mother’s collection of handwritten song lyrics and poems. He felt his face flush.

He pressed his lips into a thin line, the corners of his mouth twitching. His hands fidgeted, picking at the edge of the chair he was sitting on. The disappointment was a physical ache.
