The homeowner stood in the kitchen, the very spot where the murder had taken place, and he felt a cold dread creep into his bones. His hand instinctively went to his chest. He was having trouble breathing.

He looked around the room, everything seemed familiar, yet somehow wrong. The appliances gleamed, the countertops shone, but all he could see was the past. He imagined the scene.

He needed air. He walked quickly to the back door, needing to be away. He stumbled into the backyard, sucking in the cool air, trying to calm his racing thoughts. The house loomed behind him, a dark and silent witness.
