He’d been enjoying a quiet Sunday, the smell of freshly brewed coffee filling his apartment. Then the phone call. A woman on the other end, introducing herself as his half-sister. He hadn’t even known his father had another relationship. He felt...unmoored.

The coffee suddenly tasted bitter. He walked to the window, staring at the familiar street below, now appearing alien. The comfortable routine of his life felt fractured, shattered.

He went to the fridge, grabbing a beer even though it was only midday. He twisted the cap off with a force he didn’t realize he possessed. The cold liquid barely registered as he brought it to his lips.

He picked up the phone again, his fingers hovering over the dial pad. He needed to call someone, to ground himself, but he didn't know who to call.
