The coffee tasted like ash in Michael’s mouth. He took a hasty gulp, the bitterness doing little to soothe the growing tension in his chest. He tapped his foot against the floor, a rapid staccato beat that echoed in the otherwise quiet room. He had been so looking forward to finally addressing his anxiety. Now, the thought of sitting down with David – the same David who had made his school life a living nightmare – made him want to bolt.

He’d almost turned around at the door. He still could. But the thought of starting the search all over again felt exhausting. He took another swallow.

“Michael, you can come on in now.” It was David's voice, as neutral and professional as he could manage, probably. Michael stood up and shuffled down the hall.
