The phone slipped from her grasp, clattering onto the counter. The screen lit up, reflecting her own bewildered face. She’d been so careful, so diligent in their shared accounts. She’d trusted him completely. Now this.

She felt a hot flush creep up her neck. She paced the confines of the kitchen, her movements rapid, erratic. The walls seemed to be closing in. She reached for the phone again, then hesitated.
