He grabbed his car keys and left the house, the door slamming behind him with a resounding crack. He needed space, a vast expanse of open road. The knowledge of her secret account, a hidden nest egg, left him feeling off-kilter, unbalanced.

He drove, the speedometer climbing. He felt a strange disconnect, the world outside the car a blur. The highway stretched before him, an endless black ribbon. His chest felt constricted, as if an invisible hand was squeezing it.
