The invitation hung in the air, a polite request on a sunny Tuesday. Mr. Henderson, all smiles and cardigan, wanted to talk about the oak splitting the properties. Sarah’s hands, normally steady as she brewed her tea, fumbled with the sugar packet, tearing it haphazardly. A tremor ran through her, a prickling sensation that climbed her spine.

“Just seems a bit…much, doesn’t it?” Mr. Henderson’s voice was a gentle drone, but it sounded like nails on a chalkboard in Sarah’s ears. She nodded, unable to meet his gaze, focusing instead on the steam rising from her mug. The oak was old, a familiar presence for as long as she could remember.

Her chest felt tight, constricting with each breath. She found herself clutching the mug as if it were a lifeline. She hated the idea of change, the uncertainty that followed. This small request felt like a prelude to something larger, something she wasn't ready for.
