My breath hitched as I stared at the email. My mother, announcing her conversion to Islam. The words blurred, the elegant script of the email mocking me with its serenity. I wandered into the kitchen, the familiar scent of cinnamon from a recent baking session doing little to soothe the tremor in my hands.

I reached for the flour canister, unconsciously running my fingers over the smooth surface. The kitchen, once a haven of shared meals and family traditions, suddenly felt foreign. Would she still make her famous apple pie? Would she understand my life, my choices, in the way she always had?

I pictured her, in a hijab, praying, and a knot formed in my throat. I squeezed my eyes shut, willing the image to disappear, but it stubbornly remained, a stark reminder of the widening chasm between us. The silence in the house felt oppressive, heavy with the weight of unspoken anxieties.
