The incessant banging. It was all he heard. He slammed the laptop shut, the metallic clack echoing in the otherwise silent room. He hadn’t been able to concentrate all day. The hammering next door was a constant reminder of things lost, of time slipping through his fingers like sand.

He walked over to the window, watching the chaos unfold. The house across the street was a familiar landmark, a constant of his life. Now, it was being transformed, its identity erased.

He picked up a pen and began to tap it against his teeth. The rhythm of the tapping mirroring the cacophony outside. He wanted to scream.
