The rejection email felt like a physical blow. Amelia sat on the edge of her bed, the laptop glowing accusingly in the dim light of her room. The words, "We regret to inform you…" swam before her eyes. She hadn't even bothered to close the application's window, the carefully crafted essays and recommendation letters still visible. A sigh escaped her, a long, slow exhale that seemed to take years to complete.

Her gaze drifted to the posters on her wall, the affirmations she'd taped up to keep her spirits high during the application process. “Dream Big!” one proclaimed. Now, the phrase seemed mocking. She rubbed her temples, a dull ache throbbing behind her eyes.

She imagined telling her parents, the disappointment etched on their faces. The relief they'd felt when she’d announced her scholarship ambitions; now, that would turn to worry. A knot tightened in her stomach. She felt the weight of unspoken expectations and the pressure to succeed.
