The envelope lay unopened on the kitchen table, a stark white rectangle against the worn wooden surface. Maya hadn't even dared to pick it up yet. The silence in the small apartment was deafening, amplified by the ticking of the clock on the wall. Each tick was a beat in the slow, heavy rhythm of her anxiety.

She kept replaying the events of the past few months: the interviews, the financial aid forms, the nervous anticipation. Now, all that effort seemed like a distant dream, fading away. The scent of her mother's cooking, usually a source of comfort, felt strangely unfamiliar.

She walked to the window, watching the sunset paint the sky in hues of orange and purple. The colors seemed vibrant, yet they couldn't penetrate the gloom she felt. She turned back towards the unopened envelope, a sense of inevitability settling over her.
