He closed the lid of his laptop, the click echoing in the otherwise silent dorm room. Mark leaned back in his chair, the weight of the denial settling in his chest. He could feel his heart pounding against his ribs, a frantic rhythm that mirrored the turmoil inside.

He thought of his younger siblings, their bright faces and unwavering belief in him. He’d wanted to be an example, to show them what was possible. Now, he felt he had failed them, and failed himself.

He stared at the blank wall, his gaze unfocused. He had never felt so alone, even in the crowded dorm. The usual energy of campus felt muted, a constant reminder of what he had missed. A long exhale escaped his lips, carrying with it a heavy burden.
