He picked up his coffee, the warmth doing little to soothe the growing chill within him. He watched, almost dispassionately, as the young woman methodically followed his instructions. He remembered the struggles he went through, the long nights, the steep learning curve. He wondered if she’d understand the little nuances, the shortcuts, the tricks of the trade.

He leaned back, the plastic of his chair creaking beneath him. He felt… something. It was something like… nostalgia? Or was it regret? He couldn't quite put his finger on it.

“And this is how you handle the annual budget,” he said, his voice flat. He looked out the window. The sky was the color of lead. He thought about the future, the unknown. He felt a sense of… anticipation, perhaps? Or fear? He wasn’t sure.
