Gemotions

The familiar squeak of the gym shoes seemed to mock him. He walked towards the free-throw line, a basketball held loosely in his hands. He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. He'd been the ace pitcher, the one they depended on. Now, they wanted him to play outfield. He knew the reasoning: his arm wasn't as strong as it once was, and they needed speed out there.

He bounced the ball once, twice, then shot, the ball clanging harmlessly off the rim. A knot formed in his stomach. He’d spent years perfecting his windup, the precise angle of his release, the way the ball spun. That was his identity.

He glanced at the pitcher's mound, the worn patch of dirt, the place where he had poured his heart and soul. He imagined standing there, the weight of the game on his shoulders, the adrenaline coursing through his veins. Now, he'd be standing in the grass, watching the action unfold from afar. He felt the cold seep into him.

He picked up the basketball again, but the moment felt flat. The joy, the thrill, had been replaced by a hollowness he couldn't name. He knew he'd do it, for the team. But the price felt steep.
