The ferry churned its way across the harbor, and Emily felt the rocking motion in her gut. She leaned against the railing, watching the city skyline shrink in the distance. This was her favorite place to think, or at least, attempt to think.

The competition was more than just a matter of career advancement. The tension between her and Chloe simmered, a subtle shift in their usual easy banter. Every conversation felt like a careful dance, avoiding any mention of the interview, the job, the future.

The salt spray kissed her face, a cold reminder of the ocean's vastness. The emptiness she felt was strangely comforting, a blank canvas on which she could paint her next move. The future, she realised, was still very much open.
