The flickering neon sign outside the diner cast a kaleidoscope of colors across David’s face. He picked at his french fries, the grease staining the paper basket. Across the table, the seat usually occupied by Sam remained empty.

They'd been inseparable since college, sharing everything from dorm-room ramen to dreams of success. Now, that dream was a wedge, forcing them apart, at least for a while.

He glanced at his phone, the unread text message from Sam burned into the screen. He knew, intuitively, what it said. He felt a cold dread, a feeling of inevitability as he slid the phone back into his pocket.
