The hum of the refrigerator was the only sound in the apartment. I stared at the framed photo on the mantelpiece, their smiling faces frozen in time. Chloe. The gallery owner. The sophisticated art world, the exclusive parties, the discerning eye. A sickening feeling churned in my stomach.

He sank into the sofa, the cushions doing little to support his weight. The shared laughter, the whispered secrets, all tainted. He felt a deep sense of wrongness.

His vision blurred. He felt a stinging behind his eyes.
