A tremor started in Clara’s hands as she read the text. Her carefully planned outfit, a vibrant dress, suddenly felt like a costume. She’d spent the morning meticulously preparing, smoothing her hair and applying lipstick, all for a celebration that wouldn't happen. The sudden change of plans felt jarring, like a wrong note in a favorite song.

She stood frozen in the middle of her apartment, the silence amplifying the thrumming in her ears. The balloons she’d bought still rested in a corner, brightly colored and utterly useless. A sense of displacement, of being unmoored, settled over her. She picked up a framed photograph of her family, tracing the smiling faces with a trembling fingertip.
