The elevator doors opened onto the parking garage, and she hesitated. She had to walk by Ben's car to reach her own. She saw him there, leaning against it, talking on his phone. He was younger, sharper. She noticed how easily he seemed to belong.

She slowed her pace, her gaze dropping to the ground. She knew that he was making more. She'd accidentally overheard a conversation. The unfairness was a cold weight in her chest, settling heavily.

She quickened her pace, the rhythmic thud of her footsteps echoing in the cavernous space. The metallic scent of the garage usually invigorated her, but today it felt oppressive.

She unlocked her car and sank into the driver's seat, feeling suddenly, profoundly tired. The engine turned over and she took a deep breath.
