He stared at the blank page in front of him, the cursor blinking like a taunt. He was supposed to be writing a report, a comprehensive analysis of the latest quarterly results. But his mind was elsewhere. He couldn't seem to focus.

He'd overheard the hushed whispers in the break room, the casual mentions of Ben's new salary. The information had settled on him like a shroud. He felt a strange sense of discombobulation.

He leaned back in his chair, staring at the ceiling. The room seemed to tilt slightly. He felt a familiar ache in his temples, the precursor to a headache. He was tired.

He slammed his laptop shut. Maybe he'd start again tomorrow. Or the day after.
