David hated yard sales. They were always cluttered and smelled like old people. But his wife, bless her heart, loved them. He sighed, following her as she browsed a table piled with knick-knacks. That's when he saw him.

The bear was surprisingly pristine, though a little faded. It was sitting on a table next to a bunch of porcelain dolls. David felt a strange sensation, like a long-forgotten melody.

He stood there, motionless, staring at it. He felt a sharp pang, something that tightened his chest and made it hard to breathe. He bought the bear, not even bothering to haggle. He didn’t want his wife to see his face. She would ask questions.
