The attic air hung thick and dusty, catching in Amelia's throat as she pulled the string on the bare bulb. Cobwebs brushed her face, and she swatted them away, eyes scanning the dim space. Sunlight sliced through a cracked window, illuminating a trunk tucked into the far corner. Its brass clasps gleamed faintly. She knelt, her fingers tracing the cold metal. What secrets did it hold?

She remembered her own childhood, the thrill of hidden treasures, and the sting of unspoken goodbyes. The house, she’d learned, had held so many stories before hers. She lifted the heavy lid, the hinges groaning in protest.

Inside, nestled amongst yellowed tissue paper, was a collection of watercolor paintings – vibrant landscapes of a place she didn't recognize. A pang of something akin to sadness struck her, as though seeing another's dreams now faded in the dust. The colors, once so bright, had dimmed, but the passion behind them, the artist's touch, was still palpable.
