The beam from the flashlight cut through the darkness, illuminating cobwebs and dust motes. John's initial excitement had worn off, replaced by a sense of unease. He was searching for his childhood books. He found, instead, a small, locked chest.

He pried the lid open. Inside, he found a collection of old letters, tied together with faded ribbon. He recognized the handwriting on the envelopes. His parents. He felt his hands tremble as he unfolded one.
