The rain was coming down hard when he found the card, the streetlights reflecting in puddles on the sidewalk. He wasn't sure what to make of it. He’d almost forgotten his birthday.

He went back inside, shaking the water from his coat. The apartment felt cold and empty, a far cry from the life he’d once envisioned. He sat on the edge of his bed, the card still in his hand, a strange sense of bewilderment washing over him.

He looked around the room, at the haphazard piles of books and the dusty furniture. He thought about the people he'd lost, the opportunities he'd missed. A sigh escaped his lips, a long and drawn-out sound.
