He sat in the dimly lit diner, nursing a lukewarm coffee. The wallet lay on the table, a dark stain against the worn Formica. He'd found it in the restroom of the bus station, crammed between the sink and the overflowing trash can. The stench of stale urine and despair still clung to his nostrils, even now.

He ran a thumb across the worn leather. The bills were neatly stacked, a stark contrast to the chaos of his life. He pictured the owner, perhaps frantic, searching for it. He pictured himself, a different version, one with a cleaner slate.

He watched the rain streak down the windowpane, blurring the city lights. He recalled the faces of his youth. The shared dreams, the broken promises, the slow erosion of hope. He felt a deep, profound ache, a hollow space within him.
