The sterile white walls of the doctor’s office suddenly felt suffocating. Liam had requested the DNA test for curiosity, a lark to compare his results with his friends. The results had landed him here, pale and shaky.

He sat, frozen, as the doctor explained the findings. The words drifted, meaningless, around him. The doctor paused, observing Liam's lack of expression. She probably saw it everyday.

He focused on the faint crack in the ceiling, willing the images of his upbringing, of his family, to recede. He felt a profound sense of isolation, adrift in a sea of uncharted territory. The doctor finished her explanation, but the world was still spinning.
