The package, meant for “Mr. Thomas Bellweather,” sat unopened on the kitchen table. He stared at it, the harsh fluorescent light above casting a sterile glow. He felt a strange sort of ennui.

He ran a hand over his face, feeling the stubble of his beard. He hated this apartment. He should move. The sounds of the city outside – sirens, car horns – were a constant reminder of his isolation.
