The workshop felt colder than usual, the draft from the cracked window a constant sting on Elias's cheek. He ran a hand over the smooth, unfinished surface of the prototype, the metal strangely slick under his touch. The patent number, a cold string of digits, mocked him from the corner of the workbench where he’d taped the rejected application. His invention, a self-folding laundry system, was brilliant. He knew it. But someone else, a faceless corporation, had beaten him to it. He sank onto the stool, the wood groaning beneath his weight, a sound that mirrored the ache in his chest.

He sighed, the air misting in front of him. He picked up a rusty wrench, turning it idly in his hands, its familiar weight a poor substitute for the satisfaction he'd envisioned. Outside, the world kept turning, oblivious to the small defeat within these four walls. The radio, forgotten on a shelf, crackled with static. He thought of his late wife, her practical advice, and the way she had always believed in him. He swallowed hard.
