The chipped mug warmed Amelia's hands, the ceramic a comforting weight. Rain lashed against the window, blurring the city lights into streaks of orange and yellow. She took a slow sip of the chamomile tea, the floral scent doing little to soothe the knot in her stomach. Outside, the world continued, oblivious. Inside, her world tilted on its axis. The news article, the evidence, the accusations – they swirled in her mind like the storm brewing outside. The words of Silas Blackwood, the words she'd loved, the words that had guided her, were not his.

She traced the cover of her dog-eared copy of “Whispers of the Willow Creek,” the book that had defined her youth. The author’s signature, painstakingly copied in perfect penmanship, seemed to mock her from its place on the title page. That signature, that name – it was supposed to represent genius, originality. Now, it stood for something else entirely.

A sigh escaped her lips, a tiny puff of condensation against the cool glass. She closed her eyes, trying to recapture the feeling of reading the book for the first time, the thrill, the immersion. It was gone, replaced by a hollow ache.
