“They made a mistake.” Those words, spoken in a flat, almost emotionless tone, were all that was necessary. Michael sat on the edge of his bed, the familiar comfort suddenly failing him. He’d visualized his future in great detail, meticulously planning every step. The scholarship, his cornerstone, was now gone.

He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture almost desperate. He got up and began to pace. He thought about the sacrifices, the missed family events, the hours spent studying. He felt as if a part of himself was being erased.

The room felt stifling. He craved air, freedom. He opened the window, inhaling deeply, but the air did little to soothe him.
