He sat on the floor of his tiny apartment, surrounded by textbooks and scattered notes. The room felt smaller than usual, the walls seeming to press inward. The scholarship, the promise of a better life, had been snatched away. He felt the blood drain from his face. A deep, unsettling stillness had washed over him. He was left with an unsettling sense of isolation.

He stared at the ceiling, feeling an inexplicable emptiness. He slowly picked up a pencil, tapping it against his lips, the rhythmic sound the only thing interrupting the silence. He thought about his parents, their unwavering belief in him.

He exhaled slowly. The road ahead felt impossibly long, the climb steep and arduous.
